Mardersteig was one of the first designers within a publishing firm to establish house design rules and an elegant golden section format for the paperback book. Penguin Books publisher Allen Lane often cited the Albatross series as a typographic prototype for his company's titles, a format that was firmly established when Jan Tschichold arrived at the company in 1947.
